Each January, I pick a simple theme to guide me for the year. It just so happens that my personal theme for last year was “Do hard things.” I would intentionally seek out things that were difficult and do them. Who knew how easy it would be to find hard things to do in 2020?! Previous themes have included “Say yes a lot” and “Laugh more” among others.
My theme for this year? Here it is… “Hey 2021… When you’re ready for me, I’ll be ready for you.” I expect/hope that the second half of 2021 will look very different from the first half. With this theme in mind, I’m not going to “Mail it in” until things get back to normal. Truth is, the additional time with my wife working from home and the kids in remote school has been a real silver lining, and I will always be grateful for the time we have together. Also, the current situation provides time to focus on fitness and projects around the house. Finally, this pandemic presents unique opportunities to help others, and that will continue to be a big focus area for me. I’m reminded of a quote by the Dalai Lama that goes, “If you think you are too small to make a difference, try sleeping with a mosquito.”
I’m looking forward to leaning in to this first half of 2021 and seeing what comes of it.
