Money Monday!

My Job Evolves

The change in administration means a change for me as well. I spent a lot of time over the last four years coaching Democrats not to let their political ideology have a disproportionate effect on their investments.  With a shift of power in government, the message is the same, only this time it will be relayed to Republicans. As I reflect on the last four years and think about the next four, I have 5 thoughts for all clients….Democrats, Republicans or others:

  1. I take special care to position client assets in an effort such that short-term volatility is much less likely to affect the money earmarked for your various goals.
  2. Be careful what you take in on TV and your phone. If you select media that tells you mostly what you want to hear, acknowledge that if you are tempted to use political events to change your investments.
  3. Things have a way of swinging back-and-forth and will likely change frequently over your investment time horizon. The political party of the president starting with Biden and looking backwards has looked like this: Democrat, Republican, Democrat, Republican, Democrat, Republican, Republican, Democrat, Republican, Republican, Democrat, Democrat, Republican, Democrat, Democrat, etc.  With all this change over the years, a long-term view has served clients very well.
  4. I’m here to help. My job is to help you make the most of your money and respect your big picture goals and wishes.  You may not always like what I have to say, but I will always be straightforward and challenge a position when I determine emotions could be getting in the way.
  5. Be nice to people. I’ve had great conversations with both my Republican clients and my Democrat clients. What we have in common is we are all imperfect humans, but we are all doing our best.  Keep that in mind when tensions run high.
